What's the scoop? Is this year's car show and the camp out at Grand Rogue scheduled on two different weekends? Is there still going to be a caravan of buses that enter the car show together, if so when and where are you meeting?

Hi Dan, The person from 5/3rd Ball Park that schedules the events every year is no longer in that position. The new person did not know that weekend was always designated to the Burn Survivor Car Show and scheduled the Gus Macker Basketball Tournament on that weekend. So the Car Show had to move back one week to May 15th. Our spring event will always be held one weekend before Memorial Day weekend and it is very difficult to move change what we have been doing all these years. We look at this as an opportunity to do both. Us local bussers are going to be there to offer more support by volunteering. In the past we were unable to because of all we were involved with at the Buses By the Beach events. We would love to have you join us as a volunteer if you are interested. We see this as an opportunity to try new things and to grow our event in new and different ways. Sometimes a little change turns out be good. I think you are going to be very happy with what we have planned for you this year. It is going to be outstanding!!! I can't wait!!! Wishing you many miles of smiles! Todd,
I was about to order my shirts and register when I found this posting. For years I wanted to attend but lived in Calgary. Now we finally live in Eastern Ontario but we're still a 10 hour drive away. I've read about the camp and car show for years and I am very disappointed about the mix up in the dates. Without the car show what are you doing? It is too far to come just to camp out. Your website should make it more obvious that the car show is NOT on the same weekend. So much for tradition. Maybe next year.

I just went back and checked the BBTB home page. You still talk about the car show in great detail. If it is not happening you should let people know. I'm disappointed now, I would be really upset to get there and find out the car show was already over the week before.

pchidley.....
it's too bad you won't be attending our BBtB Bus Benefit campout this may, it's a shame because this is an awesome gathering of bus people !
while it's true because of the mix up at 5/3rd ball park the dates for the Phoenix Society Car Show and the BBtB campout/fundraiser (for the Phoenix Society) will not be happening this year on the same weekend, it's most important to remember we will STILL be raising money for the cause most important to us and which we are all very proud to say have raised thousands (is it up to $100,00? or more?) of dollars for !! believe me, the fire dept escort to the ball park is truly awesome, and all the beautiful cars displayed all for the cause of helping burn survivors, and of course our continuing winning of the "most car club participants" (woo hooo, we beat the mustangs again!) is not to be this year and it will be missed, but like todd said, our presence will be there AND our DOLLARS WILL go to the folks who need it. putting fault on our BBtB or 5/3rd does nothing to help the cause.
please go back and read all that is planned for the weekend. there is so much happening to ensure all have a great time and no matter the effort put forth to attend it will be worth it on soooo many levels.....
for me and my wife this campout is the first time we gather together this new spring with not only the buses we love but being with our dearest friends we've missed so much since we last shared our time together and our best and biggest effort to raise funds for the great folks at Phoenix Society....
i'm personally so sorry for your disappointment of no car show this year but hope you can find a way to attend our other Phoenix Society fund raising event, Bus BOOO! this fall. believe me, it's as great a time as Bus Benefit will be this May.
I will be arriving thursday May 20th to help any "newbies" get settled in and welcome anyone who comes early. look for the blue westy (named wendy), stop in, say hi, have a cold one, and get ready for an "eggcellent" weekend of fun !!
3 weeks away and counting!!...WOOOOO HOOOOO!
cathy and cheezL and of course Wendy (the wandering westy)

Hi Pchidley, Thank you for your comments and I am sorry for your disappointment. It is unfortunate that we are not going to be at the car show this year but hopefully our dates will align again next year.
At the end of the Bus Benefit last year we asked everyone to anomalously give us feedback on the weekend. We asked them to tell us what they liked and didn't like about the weekend. Although people liked the car show they hated getting up early, breaking down camp, going to the show then coming back and setting back up. The car show was also farther down the list compared to the other weekend events we have planned. The Raffle, Music and Beer tasting were the most popular events among the group. Bus Benefit is always a totally packed weekend of activities. And to be honest I am looking forward to the welcome reprieve of no car show this year. Having never been to our event this may be a little hard to understand but it is a busy weekend. We have live music from multiple bands, raffle, luncheons, breakfasts, blessing of the buses, beer tasting, train rides, campfire conversations and it is nice to have a little time to talk to all the bus family about the rides we enjoy.
Yes the website still discusses the car show. We are in the process of a major website change. Everything about our organization is changing in 2010 and so will our website. So we have postponed all updates because soon it will be scraped and completely redone.
I hope you will still consider coming to our event. If you are the kind of person that loves car shows you might be interested in the Michigan Vintage Volkswagen Club Car Show. They are hosting one of the largest Air Cooled VW Car Shows in the Mid-West on Sunday May 23. There will be a few people that are planning on leaving early Sunday morning and carabus over to the show. I will be making an announcement at the Raffle and people raise their hands if they are going so everyone can see who is going and make arrangements to hook up for the ride over if they wish.
If you come to our event I guarentee you will not be disappointed.
Wishing you many miles of smiles! Todd Olson

Pchidley, Below is an excerpt from a previous BBtB newsletter that went out to the mailing list about the weekends activities. Todd O. This year is shaping up to be a spectacular year. Some of the highlights of the weekend will be: • Live music from several artists playing roots rock, folk, bluegrass, jam and singer song writer genres. This year’s artist line up showcases some of the finest home grown Michigan music. Performing this year will be: o The Stone Boogie Band – www.myspace.com/stoneboogiebando Rosevelt Diggs - www.rooseveltdiggs.com/o Jen Sygit - www.jensygit.com/o Sam Corbin - www.samcorbin.com/o Hawks and Owls String Band - www.hawksandowls.com/HOcover_page.htmo Nicholas James - www.reverbnation.com/nicholasjamesthomasmao And maybe more… • Hundreds of VW Camping related items worth thousands of dollars will be given away at the Buses By the Beach Raffle. A couple of the big prizes are the brand new (one only) Buses By the Beach Ayers acoustic guitar and the awesome Buses By the Beach hand made quilt. Last year there were many Volks Folks that took a square to design themselves for the quilt. It has come together now into a quilt that everyone is sure to want! It is so cool! • Beer Tasting hosted by Hop Cat Brewery. Hop Cat Brewery has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame amongst Michigan beer connoisseurs. Last year they were a hit at Buses By the Beach with their newly developed “Honey Sage Beer.” • Carabus that will take you on a short journey through some beautiful country roads. • Annual Blessing of the Buses. • And many, many more activities…. (more details will be coming out soon)

Todd and others;
You said your camp was traditionally the weekend before Memorial day, it could just as easily be said that your camp was traditionally the weekend of the Car show. I can however understand why people might want something new. There are lots of VW camps but this was the only one I know of that was in conjunction with a car show. It was just something I have been looking forward to for a very long time, so it is disappointing that the year I can finally come the event isn't happening the 'traditional' way. Oh well, life is dynamic, things change, sometimes for the better.
That said, you REALLY do need to communicate better. Your home page and events page still talk about the Car show coinciding with the camp. Since this is not true you need to let people know. Yes I'm disappointed but I would be furious if I drove 10+ hours to an event that wasn't happening because no one could bother updating the website.

Dear Trashanova,
You really need to pay attention. Your home page says the camp coincides with the car show. Your events page says there WILL BE a Carabus over to the car show. I have always thought this would be a very cool event to attend. If the car show has been cancelled or changed or moved it is not your fault. It is YOUR FAULT to tell everyone that this year will be like all the other years. When it will not be. That may be a good thing, sometimes change is good, sometimes it is not. But don't encourage guests to come to an event that isn't even going to happen. Change your website. Todd's newsletters list a lot of good sounding events, but nowhere do they say the car show will not be happening as in the past.

to be honest...if youve been to one car show youve seen them all. I got to a ton of car shows and swap meets all year long. so I'm not gonna miss going to the car show this year. the campout itself is worth the drive. you should reconsider going

Paul,
Every year we drive from Waterloo Ontario to join in the fun and the fundraising for burn survivors. All I will say is that the gathering has a great group of people, in a good campground, fun events and is well worth the drive. Deb n Jon
