hi gang i don't use the a/c (never have) and was wondering if anyone knew if it was a good idea to remove the a/c belt? i did a search in vanagon archives and while there are many thoughts on a/c, there were no responces to belt removal, good idea or not........seems to me one less drag on the engine would improve my gas mileage. any thoughts my BBTB friends? see you in May!

Charlie, I know its a moot point now but... Yes you can remove the AC belt. It should give you a bit more power and help your gas mileage. Hope your trip to Atlanta went well. Brien

Charlie, The A/C compress has a magnetic clutch so the belt is adding very little resistance to the engine when not engaged. I just removed the entire A/C system from an 87-GL in about 5 hours. If you really don't want the air, remove it and sell it. I am adding the air to an 80 Westy with a 94 Subaru engine. Removing the extra weight and freeing up some storage space would be worth the effort. Let me know if you have any questions. I also have some drawings but just joined so don't if I should email them to you or post them somewhere. Paul C., Calgary, Alberta

Thanks Paul for your reply and Welcome to our little "club". When i install my new engine i will be leaving the A/C compressor off but removing the entire system from the cabinet is down the road. When the time comes for the removal i will contact you for advice and tips. Thanks!
